I sold an item, with a plainly stated flat $3 shipping.

I mail it out to the winner, first class.

I got an email today from the buyer, claiming that the postage was $0.17
under that they had to pay.

The buyer complains about the postage and demands the entire $3 back. I
suspect that's against ebay's regulations.

I replied that if they wanted their money back, just return the item and
I'll refund the entire payment.

So, the a-hole leaves me a negative feedback.

QUESTIONS: is there anything I can do to remove this negative feedback, and
can I report this idiot for trying to renege on the auction terms (i.e.
demending the $3 back).

Thanks

Not unless he's willing to do a mutual feedback withdrawal.

<http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/feedback-abuse-withdrawal.html>

You can leave a calm, factual negative for him explaining the problem, and
do a follow-up to his feedback in the same manner. Someone checking the
feedback can see his accusation and your response, and decide for
themselves who's being unreasonable.

No, but it's not worth worrying about, either. Especially if his

comment clearly states his complaint. Anyone who sells over a period of
time is bound to run into one jerk. It's much like dating in high
school and college. They're just not all winners.

Bertha recommends you reply calmly and factually. For
some odd reason, I doubt you'll be able to do that
unless you rehearse for a week or so.

Then, figure out why you need $3.00 to ship this item and
if it's really worth selling on eBay if you have to pad
shipping to hide the total cost. Otherwise, you will meet
more "a-holes" and "this idiots".

Yes, they're all over, aren;t they?

I buy things all the time that have shipping costs way over the actual.

I'm smart enough to adjust my bid accordingly, and I'm also smart enough to
know that it's done all the time as a means of establishing a minimuim price
and limiting the ebay fees.

She's a dishonest a-hole because she was trying to use it as a means of
levering a $3 rebate.

There is only one definition of actual shipping costs: ALL costs the

seller incurs over and above physically handlng the object to the buyer.

"Pad"? The way the OP reads, actual postage was $2.83.

So you work on the theory that it's okay to have shitty ethics because
other people do too?

makes me think they -- and you -- are quite willing to steal from me, too.
