JERUSALEM, April 5 (UPI) -- A British diplomat has met in
Jerusalem with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to discuss
the apparent kidnapping of a missing BBC correspondent.
The meeting of British Consul-General Richard Makepeace and
Haniyeh was the first between the British government and the
Palestinian Hamas group, which the British boycott as a terrorist
organization, The Telegraph reported Thursday.
The newspaper said that a Foreign Office spokesman confirmed
that the two discussed Alan Johnston, who was abducted from his car
in Gaza on March 12, but that that there was no indication any
progress had been made toward his release.
The British Foreign Office said the meeting had been
"requested and granted on humanitarian grounds" and didn't reflect a
change in its policy toward Hamas.
Journalists in the region have accused Palestinian officials
of not doing enough to work for Johnston's release, while the
government has said it is doing everything it can to free the
veteran BBC journalist.
